I understand this component is about:
- The overall view of technology which encompasses designing something in response to a need, a situation or an opportunity, to engaging in the production of that product. The end product (technological outcomes) created will impact on the individual or individuals that utilize it either positively or negatively, and it also has the potential of affecting other individuals indirectly.
- Technology holding a sense of history and culture and particular purpose in mind at the time a product was developed.
- Environmental and sustainable issues = consideration of environmental impacts.
- Technology raising social, cultural, political and ethical issues.

How do key understandings regarding this component link to my product?
- In designing my identity puppet I had to take into consideration the audience which I would be using the puppet which would be students who I encountered during my practicums in primary schools.
- When creating my identity puppet I reflected on my ethnic background. I was born in Fiji and have a mixture of ancestry as part of my genetic makeup (Fijian, Welsh, Scottish, Mongolian). I also wanted to note in my puppet that I am a mother to Evan (my 2 year old son) and partner to Patrick (Evan's dad). Both Evan and Patrick were born in New Zealand. The decision to make a puppet that was in two parts one representing me and on representing my son and my partner came from this reflection.
- In designing my puppet I had to take into consideration that it had to be made of hard and soft material. It also needed to have one moving part.
